As a Data Engineer, you will modernize data workflows, ensure data integrity across hundreds of applications, and empower stakeholders with actionable insights through advanced integrations and business intelligence solutions. This role is pivotal in enabling data-driven decision-making, optimizing systems, and fostering a more connected, efficient city government.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain ETL pipelines for legacy and modern systems using Python, Java, SQL, or similar languages

  • Develop seamless integration solutions between internal systems and third-party vendors

  • Collaborate with database administrators to optimize database performance and accessibility

  • Ensure data consistency, integrity, and compliance with regulations (e.g., CJIS)

  • Use APIs, web services, and direct database connections for real-time and batch data processing

  • Analyze vendor integration requests to deliver curated and compliant data sets

  • Partner with integration specialists to streamline connectivity and automate workflows

  • Investigate and resolve data discrepancies, failures, and performance bottlenecks

  • Work with system administrators to uphold data security and enforce best practices in access control

  • Support BI initiatives by structuring data for dashboards and enabling self-service insights

  • Maintain clear documentation of workflows, integrations, and dependencies

  • Develop migration strategies for modern infrastructure (cloud, hybrid, or upgraded databases)

  • Perform data analysis to uncover trends and actionable insights

  • Gather requirements and deliver BI solutions aligned with organizational goals

  • Train and support end-users in leveraging BI tools

  • Evaluate and recommend new tools, platforms, and third-party solutions

  • Conduct unit/integration testing and code reviews to ensure quality and maintainability

  • Contribute to process improvements and team productivity

Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Business Administration, or a related field

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in Data Engineering, Integration Engineering, or Data Analysis

  • Proficiency in SQL, Python, or other ETL scripting languages

  • Strong knowledge of database systems (MS SQL Server, MySQL, etc.), design, and optimization

  • Experience with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Qlik)

  • Expertise in data modeling techniques (star/snowflake, dimensional)

  • Hands-on experience with ETL tools (SSIS, Talend, Airflow, or similar)

  • Familiarity with APIs, SFTP, XML/JSON, and message queues

  • Experience in data visualization, dashboards, and data warehousing

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to support both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Familiarity with project management and requirements-gathering methodologies

Preferred Experience

  • Background in local government or public safety environments (e.g., police, fire)

  • Knowledge of version control systems (Git, TFS) and collaborative workflows

  • Hybrid experience spanning technical and business analysis roles

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure)
